5 Tips on Preparing For Laser Eye Surgery

Many people have chosen laser eye surgery to improve their vision. Knowing how to prepare for it will not only put your mind at ease, but will also help you obtain optimal results and speed recovery. Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care lists five tips to help you prepare for laser eye surgery.

Eye Check-Up

1. Determine Your Eligibility
Talk to your trusted eye doctor in Alexandria, VA to know if you are a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery. Your candidacy will be dependent on a variety of factors including age, general health, eye health and lifestyle.

2. Choose an Experienced Surgeon
When it comes to something as precise and delicate as eye surgery, there is no substitute for experience. Here at Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care, we utilize the latest in digital eye exam technology and have been caring for patients since 1964.

3. Switch from Contact Lenses to Glasses
Since contact lenses can alter the shape of the cornea, you will need to go without them for a while so that your cornea can return to its normal shape. This way, the surgeon can take precise measurements of your eyes in preparation for your surgery.

If you wear soft contact lenses, you should not wear them for at least a week before the surgery. For hard lenses, take these out three to four weeks prior. During this time, you can wear glasses.

4. Skip the Makeup
To prevent possible infections, your eyes and face will need to be as clean as possible. For best results, refrain from wearing creams, perfumes, or lotions one to two days prior to your surgery and on the day of surgery.

5. Arrange to Have Someone Drive You Home
The procedure itself should take less than 30 minutes, during which we will make sure you are as comfortable and relaxed as possible. After the surgery, you might still feel the effects of the anesthetics and your vision may be blurry, so you’ll need to arrange for someone to take you home.

If you’re interested in laser eye surgery, come in for a complimentary consultation and eye exam in our Rockville, MD office.
