At Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care, we are committed to helping you achieve excellent vision through the latest technologies and instruments in the optometry field. We continually update our services, particularly our vision correction methods. In addition to traditional corrective eyewear options like eyeglasses and contact lenses that our trusted eye doctor can prescribe for you, we also offer orthokeratology (OrthoK) as an equally reliable alternative. Here’s how it works:
The OrthoK Process
Orthokeratology is a non-surgical vision correction method that involves wearing specially engineered contact lenses overnight. While you sleep, these special contacts will correct the irregular shape or uneven surface of your cornea, and when you wake up you can remove the contacts and enjoy clear vision throughout the day. Ortho K lenses are made of gas-permeable material to keep your eyes comfortable. You’ll need to wear them every night to enjoy the benefits, as the correction they offer is only temporary.
Before prescribing OrthoK, we will perform a comprehensive eye exam to determine your suitability for this vision correction method. We will examine your ocular structures and map out your cornea, allowing us to identify your current visual acuity and establish the type and severity of your refractive error. OrthoK is primarily recommended for patients with myopia (nearsightedness).
Studies show, however, that OrthoK can also be effective at treating other vision problems, like hyperopia (farsightedness), presbyopia, and astigmatism. It’s a great option for athletes and people with active lifestyles. If your career or lifestyle brings you into regular contact with water and dust, you may find this a good option too. If your eye condition is incompatible with LASIK or other refractive surgeries, we may suggest OrthoK instead.
Perks of OrthoK
With orthokeratology, you can expect immediate results for a better quality of life. After wearing OrthoK contact lenses for just one night, you can wake up to clearer eyesight the next day without having to use your corrective eyewear. We generally recommend wearing your OrthoK lenses every night for optimum effect. This also gives you an opportunity to undergo other vision correction procedures in the future.
