Explaining How Orthokeratology (Ortho-k) Works

We can help you regain clear vision without the need for surgery with our orthokeratology (ortho-k) lenses. You wear these lenses before you sleep at night. When you wake up, you experience 20/20 vision the entire day, right until bedtime. This method is FDA-approved and safe for children of all ages as well.

How does ortho-k work?

Ortho-k lenses gently change the curvature of your cornea to correct your vision. It does this through a gas permeable mold. The central portion of the mold fits closer to the eye compared with normal contact lens. This exerts a gentle pressure on the cornea. It then changes shape to fit the outer portion of the mold. The reshaped cornea can then refocus light onto the retina, resulting in clearer vision. We can determine if ortho-k is right for you through a comprehensive eye exam in Washington DC.

What can you expect when you begin ortho-k?

We will first measure the curvature of your corneas using a corneal topographer. This procedure is quick, painless, and produces a topographical map of your eyes surface. Depending on your eyes, we might use our in-office inventory of lenses or order custom ortho-k lenses for later fitting. Our eye doctor in Arlington, VA, may also give you a series of temporary lenses to help you reach the preferred prescription. In many cases, you only need up to three pairs of lenses to reach maximum vision correction.

Who are good candidates for ortho-k?

The ortho-k method is safe, non-invasive, and reversible. It is a good alternative for those who cannot or do not want to undergo surgery. It is also a good choice for children. As an expert in contact lenses in Washington DC, we also recommend this method for people who participate in contact sports. People who work in dusty environments where they cannot wear contacts can also benefit. Ortho-k lenses are also smaller than regular contact lenses. They are more comfortable and easier to remove and apply.

Ortho-k lenses are an excellent choice for athletes, children, and people who cannot or do not want to undergo surgery. The expert eye doctors at Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care will help and see if ortho-k is the right choice for you. We use state of the art digital eye examination technology.
