Instructions For Cleaning A Soft Contact Lens

Instructions for Cleaning a Soft Contact Lens With “No-Rub” Solution

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly using a pure soap that does not contain additives – anti-bacterial pump soap is the best. Be sure to rinse all soap off of your hands before handling contact lens. If necessary, use a fingernail brush to thoroughly clean the fingers and hands.
  2. Close or cover the drain when working over a basin. We recommend putting a paper towel over the drain and the bottom of the sink.
  3. Remove your contact lenses. In the palm of your hand, rinse the lens thoroughly for 5 seconds with a firm stream of contact lens cleaning solution on each side of the lens.
  4. Fill a fresh, new case with the same solution you used to rinse the lens and let soak overnight. If your case has been used before, dump solution from prior use, rinse thoroughly with new solution, then refill and put your lenses in. DO NOT RINSE LENSES OR CASE WITH TAP WATER. Alcohol case, boil case briefly or replace with new case every 2 weeks.
  5. DO NOT EXTEND WEAR OF YOUR LENSES PAST RECOMMENDED WEARING TIME. The FDA has done detailed studies on your lens to determine the period of time through which they can be safely worn and disposed of. This is the FDA’s limit; not your doctors, and extending the use of your lens can lead to eye infections, eye inflammations and conditions that may cause a need to have you totally discontinue contact lens wear for more than 6 months

Instructions for Cleaning a Soft Contact Lens With Hydrogen-Peroxide Cleaning  Systems (Sauflon, Clear Care, UltraCare)

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly using a pure soap that does not contain additives – anti-bacterial pump soap is the best. Be sure to rinse all soap off of your hands before handling contact lens. If necessary, use a fingernail brush to thoroughly clean the fingers and hands.
  2. BE SURE NEVER TO GET THE CLEANING SOLUTION IN YOUR EYE AND BE SURE YOUR LENSES ARE THOROUGHLY RINSED AFTER CLEANING TO AVOID GETTING THE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE IN YOUR EYE
  3.  Close or cover the drain when working over a basin. We recommend putting a paper towel over the drain and the bottom of the sink.
  4. Insert your lenses in the lens holder provided.  Note that the lens holder has an “L” on one side to indicate “left lens”.
  5. Fill the container to the line with the hydrogen peroxide solution.
  6. Immerse your lens holder in the solution and screw down the cap. Be sure to leave your lenses within the cleaner while bubbling and at least 6 hours afterwards.
  7. Remove your lens holder and rinse through the holder with sterile saline.
  8. You may then wear your contacts or store them in SALINE, not DISINFECTANT/CLEANER
  9. If you notice that your contact lenses are starting to bother you more each day, it might be time to start with a fresh lens holder; the lens holder has a small disc on the bottom that catalyzes the hydrogen peroxide into water over a 6 hour period so if the catalyst disk is wearing down (takes about 2 – 3 months to wear down in most cleaning systems) you should notice a big difference in lens comfort after changing it.
