LASIK Care 101: Before and After the Surgery

Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care offers laser eye surgery (LASIK) as one of our vision correction methods. While LASIK is an extremely safe procedure, proper preparation and postoperative care are necessary to ensure a speedy recovery.

LASIK Care 101

Preparing for LASIK

LASIK pre-operative care is about helping you understand how the procedure works and determining if you’re a good candidate for it. LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis and involves using a laser device to create a flap on your cornea. The flap is then retracted to modify or remove the underlying tissues that are causing your refractive error. Afterward, we’ll return the flap to its original position.

You have to be at least 18 years old to be eligible for LASIK. Your visual acuity needs to have been stable for at least one year, and your cornea and retina must be in good condition. This is why we will perform a comprehensive eye exam to assess your eye health. Good overall health is also necessary.

Once we confirm you’re qualified for LASIK, we’ll provide pre-operative instructions. We may ask you to stop using contact lenses for several weeks prior to the surgery. The day before the surgery, you’ll need to refrain from applying creams, lotions, makeup and perfume. We also advise arranging for a transportation home after the procedure since you may feel dizzy and your vision may be blurry immediately after.

Post-Operative LASIK Care

After the procedure, your eyes may feel watery and irritated. Your reliable eye doctor may prescribe some pain relievers and eye drops for your improved visual comfort. You may begin to notice changes in your vision within a few days. Most of the time, our patients are able to resume their normal activities after a day or two.

For the first week after you have the procedure, you should wear sunglasses when going outside. Additionally, we recommend avoiding swimming, rubbing your eyes or participating in contact sports. Most importantly, keep your post-operative appointment with your eye doctor so we can evaluate the surgery’s effectiveness.

For more information about LASIK, call us today at (301) 859-4060. You may also complete our form to request an appointment. We serve Washington, DC, Rockville, MD, and Alexandria, VA.
