At Shady Grove Eye and Vision Care, we are committed to continually updating our knowledge and techniques regarding our vision correction procedures. In addition to offering traditional corrective eyewear options like eyeglasses and contact lenses, we also offer laser eye surgery, often referred to as LASIK. Here, we answer some frequently asked questions about LASIK:
Q: What Is LASIK?
LASIK stands for laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis. It is a refractive surgery that uses light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation (laser) to reshape your cornea and correct your refractive error. The result is sharper visual acuity and better quality of life.
Q: Am I Qualified to Undergo LASIK?
We will perform a comprehensive eye exam to determine whether you are a good candidate for the procedure. Certain eye problems, like keratoconus, may be better managed by other methods. To be eligible for LASIK, patients must generally be in a healthy and stable condition, meaning free from eye diseases or infections as well as corneal scars.
You also need to have a strong and healthy immune system. Finally, you need to be at least 18 years or older, as dictated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Q: How Does LASIK Work?
Your reliable eye doctor will begin by applying anesthetic drops on your eyes to reduce your discomfort. Using the laser beam, we’ll then create a flap on your cornea and retract it. We’ll remove unnecessary corneal tissue, modifying the shape of your cornea to correct your refractive error.
Q: What Are the Benefits of LASIK?
LASIK may reduce your dependence on wearing corrective eyewear, giving you a feeling of normalcy and a better quality of life. The length of the procedure and recovery time are relatively short, and LASIK offers long-lasting results.
Q: Will I Have to Wear Glasses Afterward?
While LASIK is a lasting and effective solution to refractive errors, it doesn’t guarantee you’ll never need to wear corrective eyewear again. As you age, you may develop ocular changes that could require further management.
